One billion acres of GM

One billion acres of GM ››
Regardless of your opinion about GM, you should gasp at this: it's a notable, quotable statistic that, sometime in the last week or so, somebody somewhere planted out the billionth acre of GM crops. (A billion is a bigger number than seven letters might suggest.) That's the aggregate total over ten years, of which one fifth (200 million acres) was planted last year. The Global Footprint Network's glossary says there is about 3.75 billion acres of cropland, while the entire biosphere--all the biologically productive space--is about one quarter of the planet's surface i.e. 28.2 billion acres. So the biotech crops are ~5% of all crops. Gasp again, regardless of your opinion (however extreme).
