Pint-sized fusion reactors

Pint-sized fusion reactors ››
Naranjo and coworkers have gone where Pons and Fleischmann failed to go: into credibility. They have published a peer-reviewed paper in Nature plausibly demonstrating low-tech nuclear fusion. The apparatus fits in your hand and, after 30 celsius delta-T, produces a stream of room-temperature neutrons. The editorial commentary states:

Now comes a claim from the labs of the University of California at Los Angeles of unequivocal evidence of nuclear fusion in a simple room-temperature experiment.

Not many neutrons--hundreds rather than the billions necessary for power generation--but it's early days right? And for some applications, a little goes a long way. For example, there's an appealing little vignette at the end of the New Scientist coverage:

Putterman [the senior author] also suggests the crystals could be used as microthrusters for tiny spacecraft. By accelerating deuterium in one direction, the spacecraft would be propelled in the opposite direction.

Oh yes! (via)
