Alais and Carlile show that "when robust cues to auditory distance are present, the brain can synchronize disparate audiovisual signals to external events despite considerable differences in time of arrival at the perceiver". In other words, the time delay between visual and auditory cues does not confuse the brain, thunderbolts and lightning notwithstanding. More complicated hardware in our heads.
