Porter and coworkers show that signals from different nostrils are processed by different parts of the primary olfactory cortex. The superior temporal gyrus then combines the signals to provide localization; this same part of the brain is also thought to combine the other sensory inputs to provide spatial orientation i.e. sights and sounds. That's a nice example of apparent parsimonious modulation. (press release) (via)
